Frequently Asked Questions About Online CounselingWhat is online counseling? Online counseling (Sometimes referred to as Telehealth or Telemental Health) is psychotherapy that occurs between a licensed counselor and a client online rather than at a physical location.
How does it work? Once we’ve decided that online counseling is a good fit for you, it is important that you identify a quiet, comfortable, and private room that is equipped with a computer, internet access, and web-cam. Then we will each log onto a safe, confidential online videoconferencing system to meet for your private counseling session. How is this different than traditional in-person counseling? Other than not being in the same room together, there is little difference. However, there are some advantages to online counseling that are worth mentioning! It is: o Accessible—no need to get in your car to go anywhere. Relief is a click away. o Easy—the secure client portal can be reached with a smartphone, tablet or computer. o Comfortable—settle into your perfect chair in the comfort of your own home. Are videos recorded? No. There are no permanent videos or voice recording kept of our online sessions. Your privacy and confidentiality are of the upmost importance so great measures have been taken to protect them. Who can you work with? I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in Iowa (LMHC) and South Dakota (LPC-MH) and am able to work with any individuals in my private practice as long as they live in Iowa or South Dakota. What can I expect at the first session? Our first meeting is about getting to know one another. You can expect to share your concerns, experiences, and personal history. You’ll learn about my counseling style, practice policies, and my assessment of your concerns. My objective is to gather information, help you identify your goals, and together we will develop a plan to get you feeling great again. How long does a counseling session take? Sessions are typically 50 minutes, one time per week. But there is room to tailor sessions to your needs. We can decide if longer sessions or less frequent sessions are needed. Does insurance cover online counseling sessions? In light of current concerns regarding COVID-19 many insurance plans will now cover some or all of the cost of a session and in some cases even wave your copay. Solomon Recovery can make no guarentees about coverage and so it is highly recommended that you check with your insurance provider prior to an online session to ensure coverage.
